Yvette Ogungbe, our Head of Client Success, spends her days in the gap between what clients ask for and what creatives need to hear. Her advice for anyone sitting in that seat starts with a count: the job has three relationships in it, and only two of them show up on the org chart.

Let me tell you something I wish someone had told me earlier: to be successful in this role in a creative agency, you're not managing one relationship. You're managing three. Your clients, your team, and yourself. And each one needs something completely different from you.

The job title says Client Success, which makes it sound like a one-way street. It is a three-way street, and the traffic is heavy. Resource Guru's 2025 survey of 373 UK agency workers found that 95% work overtime and 38% have experienced burnout in their current job. Among those who burned out, 46% named demanding clients as a cause. Nothing about that is unique to London. Anyone who has run a Lagos launch week will recognise it.

Clients: be reliable, not charming

Let's start with clients. Here's the truth: they don't need you to be charming. They need you to be reliable. They don't want to see the late nights or the internal back-and-forth. They want clarity. So tell them what to expect early. Put things in writing. And if there's bad news, share it before it turns into a surprise. Trust me, they'll respect you more for it.

The numbers agree. In the Setup 2025 Marketing Relationship Survey, delivery dissatisfaction was the most common reason clients gave for dropping an agency, cited by 48% of respondents. Charm did not make the list.

Your team: advocate and translator

Now, your team. You're their advocate, and honestly, their translator. Clients talk about results; creatives talk about ideas. When a client says "make it pop", it's on you to turn that into something your team can actually work with. Protect them from those endless "small tweaks". Give them context, not just deadlines. And when the work wins, make sure they get the credit.

A few habits that keep the middle from collapsing:

  • Play the brief back to the client in plain words before it reaches the creatives, so "make it pop" becomes a sentence both sides have agreed.

  • Collect feedback into one consolidated round with one named decision-maker.

  • Send bad news the day you learn it, with a proposed fix attached.

  • Name the people behind the win in the client thread when the work lands.

You: the relationship we forget

Then there's you. This is the one we forget. When a client rejects work your team poured their hearts into, it hurts. You feel it for them and for yourself. Don't bottle it up, and don't pass it down. Pause. Name what you're feeling. Then respond when you're calm.

That pause has a business case. Of the burned-out workers in the Resource Guru survey, 37% admitted to making mistakes at work and 32% to delivering lower-quality work. A calm account lead protects the quality of what leaves the building.

The bridge

So here's my advice: face your clients with composure, your team with empathy, and yourself with honesty.

Do that, and you won't feel stuck in the middle anymore. You'll be the bridge.

It is the same habit behind the reporting system our CEO described last week: say what is happening early, keep it in one place, and put a name against it.

Key Takeaways
  • The role has three relationships to manage: clients, team and yourself.

  • Clients value reliability over charm, so set expectations early and share bad news before it becomes a surprise.

  • Translate between results and ideas for your team, and protect them from endless small tweaks.

  • Pause before you respond to a rejection, because your own composure is part of the quality of the work.
